Fault Analysis and Protection of VSC-HVDC Line

Abstract:

The development of high-power fully controlled power electronic device manufacturing and control technology promotes the construction of voltage source converter based high voltage direct current(VSC-HVDC) project. Due to the special control mode and topology of VSC-HVDC, the fault current surges rapidly and can cause severe damages in the case of DC-side faults. This paper discusses the fault types and protection partitions generated by VSC-HVDC transmission system, and introduces the application status of DC circuit breakers, converter and AC circuit breaker in combination with the present fault isolation technology. In order to quickly isolate faults, the paper elaborates on the traveling wave protection, differential undervoltage protection and other new protections, and expects the development trend of VSC-HVDC transmission.
